Hair Trends

Here are the latests hair trends for 2009/2010 From Vouge

The middle part has enjoyed the lion’s share of the hair trend spotlight for too many seasons. Now it’s time to welcome back the side-swept look.

And what else? After watching the experts work their magic backstage at the autumn/winter 2009/10 shows, we’ve picked the top five hair trends you need to try now.

The look: top knots

Up, up and away! Slick and seriously disheveled up ‘dos were piled high at Christain Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Moschino and Emanuel Ungaro. The best bit about this look? It can be polished and modern or playful and carefree. “Think Kate Moss, with her easy chic style,” hairstylist Jimmy Paul said backstage at Ungaro.

The look: lift it up

Blame it on the eighties craze that’s sweeping the fashion world this season, but outrageous Amy Winehouse-esque beehives hit new heights at Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier and Oscar de la Rentashow. More wearable were the bouncy Christy Brinkley waves and stiffened backcombed fringes seen at Chloe and Gucci respectively.

The look: slick to the side

Long live the side-swept part. The severe side part was worn straight at Salvatore Ferragamo and slicked down at Giorgio Armani. It gave hair a ladylike edge at Michael Kors, added androgyny to Miu Miu, a sexy cool touch to Balmain and an unkempt air at Marni. Phew. So many looks in one quick step.

The look: undone princess

Sexy textured waves were the call of the day at Chanel, Dsquared and at Burberry Prorsum. “It’s slightly wavy, slightly disheveled – my favourite thing,” hairstylist Sam McKnight said backstage at the Chanel show. “It’s a very young, fresh, cool look,” he confirmed. And the perfect accompaniment to Chanel’s latest offerings.

The look: crimp it real good

We saw the retro look work the runway at the couture collections. Then Karl Lagerfeld and Givenchy gave the crunched eighties shape a go at the ready-to-wear shows. Fortunately this time round crimping has lost its neon eighties club kid touch and has gone more grown-up. “Think New Wave, with crisp edges and graphic patterns. Or modern Gothic, if you wish,” hairstylist Luigi Murenu said at Givenchy.

Balliage - What is balliage?

It’s free hand painting, basically. Yep, your colourist literally paints the hair dye into your hair without using any special ‘system’ as such, they just paint it on freehand to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair.

What hair type is balliage suited to?

Anyone with medium or long hair. But, if you have a really blunt, one length we recommend steering clear. A cut with some texture and movement. Long layers are ideal.

How do I maintain balliage?

Most balliage needs a maintenance check every 8-12 weeks. It may need a toner on the ends to brighten up the blonde or remove brassiness. It’s also a good idea to put a deeper gloss on the roots for depth and shine. Or, to cover up any odd grey.

How do I care for it correctly?

Because most balliage is created using bleach or other lightening products, it’s really important that you use a leave in moisturiser everyday to ensure your hair doesn’t get too dry. I’ve found that my hair is a little drier than it was, but only on the blonde bits. That’s also why I love my extensions because I have heaps of really light pieces in my hair but it doesn’t damage it. Good one! As well as the daily moisturiser, we recommend you use a hair treatment masque once a week, too.

How do I know it will suit me?

Your hairdresser will tell you. They’re very good at that. They’ll mainly advise you more on the tones that suit your skintone and see whether you should go for more honey, caramel or copper tones. It’s very versatile. But, be warned if you have colour build up from your current hair dye, you may not be able to transform it in one hit. It may take time.
